Designs by Doris Chan

"Doris is probably the most unique, most particular and most passionate designers in the business.  She tests stitches, color combinations, yarn types and silhouettes until she gets exactly what she wants – and this precision is reflected in the results.  Examples of color combinations are the Rockport throw in Country and the Archena skirt in Spa.  Examples of how Doris combines unusual stitches to create a totally individual piece are the Avalon and Lapa tops in Spa.  Doris has said that her favorite yarn to use for herself personally is Spa:  the weight, construction and fiber blend is perfect.  We’ve even accommodated Doris in working on darker colors of Spa."

hroughout my childhood I’d seen my mother do needlework and learned from her by example. I can’t remember exactly why I was home from school that week. I think I might have had the mumps, or was it after I had my tonsils out. Whatever. I wasn’t allowed to go outside and ride my bike, climb trees or pet the neighbor’s pony. I’d read all the books I had at home. I was bored to tears and probably so was my mom who was stuck at home with me. So mom put me to work with knitting needles, crochet hook and yarn. Frankly I was glad to go back to school.

Fast forward to nearly a decade ago when I went into early “retirement”. The radio station at which I was employed was sold to a Spanish language company, my insistence that I could learn Spanish fell on deaf ears, and I found myself in the absurd state of having no job, an empty nest and nothing to do. I put myself to work with needles, hook and yarn. This time the crochet spoke to me.

Since then I have designed hundreds of garments and accessories for yarn companies and for publication in magazines and books. I joined the Crochet Guild Of America (CGOA), one of the most brilliant things I’ve ever done because it put me smack in the middle of the action, among people who spoke my language. I’ve written two crochet design books, Amazing Crochet Lace and Everyday Crochet, both from Potter Craft, with a third book in production due for release in Spring 2010. I also explore my personal crochet experience on my blog, www.doriseverydaycrochet.blogspot.com.

Cari Clement could not have anticipated my joy at receiving those first skeins of NaturallyCaron.com Spa. As a designer I specialize in seamless, lacy garments and appreciate how Spa perfectly complements my modus operandi. Here is a yarn I would live in. Lightweight, easy-care, supremely soft, with a silky drape and slight sheen, Spa turns crocheted fabric into a sensuous experience.

Then Cari asked me to create an afghan using worsted weight Country. I am allergic to wool and at first I balked. But I had no worries. The fiber blend makes Country soft, smooth and comfortable to crochet and to be near. For sweaters and vests, accessories and home décor, this is a great choice.
