FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

Throw measures approximately 30 x 70"/71 x 178 cm, including border;

Hat measures approximately 21"/35.5 cm circumference.

 

GAUGE

In Tunisian simple stitch (Tss) using afghan hook, 17 sts and 16 rows = 4"/10 cm.

 

STITCHES USED

Chain (ch), double crochet (dc), single crochet (sc), slip stitch (slip st).

 

SPECIAL STITCHES

ldc: Long double crochet – Yarn over, insert hook in indicated stitch 2 rows below, yarn over and draw up a loop (to current row height), [yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] twice.

Tunisian Simple Stitch (Tss)

Note: Each row of Tunisian Simple Stitch is worked in two steps, A forward pass and a back pass.

Forward Pass: With RS facing, working from right to left, pick up the stitches:

Skip first vertical bar in previous row, *insert hook in next vertical bar, yarn over and draw up a loop (2 loops on hook); repeat from * across.

Back Pass: With RS facing, working from left to right, work off the stitches:

Yarn over and draw through first loop on hook, *yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook; repeat from * across.

Repeat Forward and Back Pass for 1 row of Tunisian Simple Stitch.

Last Row (Forward Pass): Skip first vertical bar in previous row, *insert hook in next vertical bar, yarn over and draw through vertical bar and loop on hook; repeat from * across.

 

NOTE

When working Tunisian simple stitch, change colors according to chart, introducing new colors on forward rows. Bring new color under previous color to avoid holes.

THROW

With afghan hook and A, ch 102.

Foundation Row (Row 1 of Chart):

Forward Pass: Skip first ch, *insert hook in next ch, yarn over and draw up a loop, leave loop on hook (2 loops on hook); repeat from * across, drawing up a loop in each ch.

Back Pass: Yarn over and draw through first loop on hook, *yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook; repeat from * across.

Rows 2–254: Work in Tss according to chart.

With A, work Last Row of Tss. Fasten off.

Border           

With larger crochet hook, join A with sl st in any corner.

Note: When working Round 1, ensure that you work an odd number of sts along each edge, between corners.

Round 1: Ch 1, sc evenly around all edges of throw, working 3 sc in each corner; join with sl st in first sc.

Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, working 3 sc in each corner; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.

Round 3: Join D with sl st in any corner st, ch 1, 3 sc in same corner st, *sc in next sc, [ldc in next st 2 rows below, sc in next sc] to next corner, 3 sc in corner; repeat from * around; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.

Round 4: With E, repeat Round 3. Fasten off.

Round 5: Join A with sl st in any corner st, 3 sc in same corner st, sc in each st around, working 3 sc in each corner; join with sl st in first sc.

Rounds 6 and 7: With A, repeat Round 2 twice. Fasten off.

Round 8: With C, repeat Round 3. Fasten off.

Round 9: With E, repeat Round 3. Fasten off.

Rounds 10–12: Repeat Rounds 5–7. Fasten off.

Round 13: With B, repeat Round 3. Fasten off.

Round 14: With E, repeat Round 3. Fasten off.

 

KUFI

With smaller crochet hook and A, ch 4; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.

Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), work 11 more dc in ring; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—12 dc.

Round 2: Ch 3, dc in same st as join, 2 dc in each dc around; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—24 dc.

Round 3: Ch 3, dc in same st as join, dc in next dc, *2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc; repeat from * around; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—36 dc.

Round 4: Ch 3, dc in same st as join, dc in next 2 dc, *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 2 dc; repeat from * around; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—48 dc.

Round 5: Ch 3, dc in same st as join, dc in next 3 dc, *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 3 dc; repeat from * around; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—60 dc.

Round 6: Ch 3, dc in same st as join, dc in next 4 dc, *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 4 dc; repeat from * around; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—72 dc.

Round 7: Ch 3, dc in same st as join, dc in next 5 dc, *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 5 dc; repeat from * around; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—84 dc.

Round 8: Ch 3, dc in same st as join, dc in next 6 dc, *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 6 dc; repeat from * around; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—96 sts.

Round 9: Ch 1, working in back loops only, sc in each dc around; join with sl st in first sc.

Rounds 10 and 11: Ch 1, sc in each sc around; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.

Round 12: Join D with sl st in any sc, ch 1, sc in same st, ldc in next st 2 rows below, *sc in next st, ldc in next st 2 rows below; repeat from * around; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.

Round 13: Join E with sl st in any dc, ch 1, sc in same st, ldc in next sc 2 rows below, *sc in next dc, ldc in next sc 2 rows below; repeat from * around; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.

Round 14: Join A with sc in any st, sc in each remaining st around; join with sl st in first sc.

Rounds 15 and 16: With A, ch 1, sc in each sc around; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.

Round 17: With C, repeat Round 12. Fasten off.

Round 18: Repeat Round 13. Fasten off.

Rounds 19–21: Repeat Rounds 14–16. Fasten off.

Round 22: With B, repeat Round 12. Fasten off.

Round 23: Repeat Round 13. Fasten off.

Round 24–26: Repeat Rounds 14–16. Fasten off.

Rounds 27: Repeat Round 12. Fasten off.

Round 28: Repeat Round 13. Fasten off.
