SPECIAL STITCHES

3-dc Cl: Three double crochet cluster—Yarn over, insert hook in indicated stitch or sp and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook (2 loops remain on hook); [yarn over, insert hook in same stitch or sp and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] 2 times; yarn over and draw through all 4 loops on hook.

beg-Cl: Beginning cluster—Ch 2, yarn over, insert hook in indicated stitch or sp and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook (2 loops remain on hook); yarn over, insert hook in same stitch or sp and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook; yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

popcorn: Work 5 dc in indicated stitch, drop loop from hook, insert hook in first dc of 5-dc group, place dropped loop back on hook and draw through, ch 1 to close popcorn. Notes: When making popcorn, on RS rows, insert hook in top of first dc from front to back; on WS rows insert hook from back to front. When working a stitch into a popcorn work only into the closing ch-1.

 

NOTES

1. To change color, work last stitch of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete stitch. Proceed with new color. Carry B (leaf color) and C (flower color) across entire width of row, always working over strand of color not in use.

2. When working a two-color row, before changing color, give the carried color a slight tug to make sure you don't have any excess yarn. Take care not to pull so tightly that you distort the sts below.

Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each remaining ch across, turn—133 sc.

Row 2 (leaf row): Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), carry B working over it until needed, dc in next 3 sts, change to B, sk next 2 sts, (3-dc Cl, ch 3, 3-dc Cl) in next st (leaf pair made), *change to A, sk next 2 sts, dc in next 15 sts, change to B, sk next 2 sts, (3-dc Cl, ch 3, 3-dc Cl) in next st; repeat from * to last 6 sts, change to A, sk next 2 sts, dc in last 4 sts, turn—98 dc, and 7 leaf pairs. Fasten off B.

Row 3 (flower row): Ch 3, carry C, dc in next 3 sts, change to C, sk next Cl, popcorn in next ch-3 sp (flower made), sk next Cl, *change to A, dc in next 15 dc, change to C, sk next Cl, popcorn in next ch-3 sp, sk next Cl; repeat from * to last 4 sts, change to A, dc in last 4 sts, turn—98 dc, and 7 popcorns. Edging

Note: Do NOT join rounds unless instructed.

Begin with RS facing.

Round 1 (RS): Ch 1, work sc in each dc and hdc, and 2 sc in each ch-2 sp across Row 64 to last st, 3 sc in last st (corner made); working in ends of rows across side edge, 2 sc in end of each row to Row 1, sc in end of Row 1; working in opposite side of foundation ch, 3 sc in first ch (corner made), sc in each ch to last ch, 3 sc in last ch (corner made); working in ends of rows across next side edge, sc in end of Row 1, 2 sc in end of each row across edge; 2 sc in same st as first st of this round; do not join, work in continuous rounds—528 sc (133 sc between corner sts on top and bottom, 129 sc between corner sts on sides). Note: A corner stitch is the center sc of a 3-sc corner.

Rounds 2–4: Sc in each st around, working 3 sc in center st of each 3-sc corner—552 sc (139 sc between corner st on top and bottom 135 sc between corner sts on sides) at the end of Round 4.
Fasten off.

Round 5: Join B with sl st in any corner st of Round 4, beg-Cl in same corner st, *sk next 3 sts, (3-dc Cl, ch 5, sl st in 3rd ch from hook, ch 1, 3-dc Cl) in next st; repeat from * around to last 3 sts, sk last 3 sts, 3-dc Cl in same corner st as beg-Cl, ch 5, sl st in 3rd ch from hook, ch 1; join with sl st in top of beg-Cl. Fasten off.

 

FINISHING
Using yarn needle, weave in all ends. Block lightly, if desired.
