(75% Microdenier Acrylic/25% Merino Wool; 3oz/85g, 185yds/170m):
#0024 Black (A): 1 ball
#0017 Claret (B): 1 ball
#0016 Charcoal (C): 1 ball

One size US I-9 (5.5mm) crochet hook
(for body of scarf), or size to obtain gauge
One size US G-6 (4mm)crochet hook
(for border)

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

Scarf measures approximately 9"/23cm wide x 40"/101.5cm long

              

GAUGE

In pattern stitch with larger hook , 15 sts = 4 "/ 10cm

Gauge is not critical for this project.

 

STITCHES USED

Chain (ch), double crochet (dc), half double crochet (hdc), single crochet (sc), slip stitch (sl st)

 

NOTES

1. Scarf is worked using 4 different pattern stitches. Each pattern is worked for 10"/25.5cm.

2. To change color, work last stitch of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete stitch. Proceed with new color.

 

PATTERN A (Griddle Group Stitch)

With A, ch 35.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each remaining ch across, turn—34 sc.

Row 2: Ch 1, *sk next sc, (sc, dc) in next sc; repeat from * across, turn—17 (sc, dc) groups.

Row 3: Ch 1, (sc, dc) in first dc, *sk next sc, (sc, dc) in next dc; repeat from * across to last sc, turn; leave last sc unworked.

Repeat Row 3 until piece measures 10"/25.5cm from beginning; change to B in last stitch of last row. Fasten off A.

 

PATTERN B (Back Loop Single Crochet)

Rows 1 and 2: With B, ch 1, sc in each st across, turn—34 sc.

Row 3: Ch 1, working in back loops only, sc in each sc across, turn.

Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until piece measures 20"/51cm from beginning; change to C in last stitch of last row. Fasten off B.

 

PATTERN C (Crunch Stitch)

Row 1: With C, *sl st in next st, hdc in next st; repeat from * across, turn—34 sts.

Row 2: Ch 1, *sl st in next hdc, hdc in next sl st; repeat from * across, turn.

Repeat Row 2 until piece measures 30"/76cm from beginning; change to B in last stitch of last row. Fasten off C.

 

PATTERN D (Checkerboard)

Row 1: With B, ch 2 (counts as dc), sk first dc, dc in next 3 sts, [ch 3, sk next 3 sts, dc in next 3 sts] 5 times; change to A in last st, turn—Six B-colored 3-dc groups. Do not fasten off B. Carry colors not in use up side of piece until next needed. Hide carried strands when working border.

Row 2: With A, ch 3, sk first 3 dc, working over next ch-3, dc in 3 skipped sts of previous row, [ch 3, sk next 3 dc, working over next ch-3, dc in next 3 skipped sts of previous row] 4 times, ch 3, sk next 3 dc, sl st in top of beginning ch; change to C in last st, turn—Five A-colored 3-dc groups. Do not fasten off A.

Row 3: With C, ch 2 (counts as dc), sk first skipped dc of previous row, working over first ch-3, dc in next 2 skipped dc of previous row, *ch 3, sk next 3 dc, working over next ch-3, dc in next 3 skipped dc of previous row; repeat from * across; change to B in last st, turn—Six C-colored 3-dc groups. Do not fasten off C.

Row 4: With B, repeat Row 2; change to A in last st—Five B-colored 3-dc groups.

Row 5: With A, repeat Row 3; change to C in last st—Six A-colored 3-dc groups.

Repeat Rows 2–5 until piece measures 40"/101.5cm from beginning. Fasten off.

 

FINISHING

Using yarn needle, weave in all ends. Block piece to measure 10 x 40"/25.5 x 101.5cm. Sew short edges of piece together, to form a ring.

Border

Round 1: Join B with sc in edge of scarf, sc evenly spaced around edge; join with sl st in first sc.

Round 2: Ch 2, *sc in next st, ch 1; repeat from * around; join with sl st in beginning ch-2.

Fasten off and weave in end. Repeat around other edge of scarf.

Block again, lightly, if desired.
