FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: Shawl measures 60"/152.5 cm around front edge x 25"/63.5 cm long measured from back neck
GAUGE In mesh pattern, using US I-9 (5.5 mm) hook, 12 sts and 8 rows = 4"/10 cm. In cluster pattern, using US I-9 (5.5 mm) hook, 6 cluster repeats and 8 rows = 4"/10 cm.
STITCHES USED Chain (ch), double crochet (dc), half double crochet (hdc), single crochet (sc), slip stitch (slip st), treble crochet (tr)
SPECIAL TERMS Fsc: Foundation single crochet (This technique creates a foundation chain and a row of single crochet stitches at the same time) – Step 1:Place a slip knot on hook, ch 2, insert hook in second ch from hook and draw up a loop; yarn over and draw through one loop on hook (the "chain"); yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook (the "single crochet"). Step 2:The following stitch is worked under the forward 2 loops at the base of the previous stitch (into the "chain"). Insert hook into the face of the "chain" and under the nub at the back of the "chain", draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through one loop on hook (the "chain"), yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook (the "single crochet"). Repeat for the length of foundation. V-st: 2 dc in indicated space. V-st in V-st: 2 dc in space between 2 dc of indicated V-st. 3-double crochet cluster (Cl): Yarn over, insert hook in indicated space, yarn over and draw up a loop (three loops on hook), yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook (2 loops on hook), [yarn over, insert hook in same space, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] twice, yarn over and draw through all 4 loops on hook. Shell: (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in indicated space. Fan: (tr, ch 1) 4 times in indicated space, tr in same space. Picot: Ch 3, slip st from top to bottom through all front strands of last stitch made. When working in spaces between stitches, insert the hook in the space below between the stitches instead of through the top loops of the stitch.
NOTES 1. Gauge is relaxed; shawl will grow slightly when blocked and worn. Block shawl to achieve finished length. 2. To change color at end of row, work last stitch of old color to last yarn over, yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete stitch. 3. Shawl has three sections: 1) solid color mesh section, shaped with increases to form a three-quarter circle, 2) three color cluster section, and 3) lace ruffle section. A scallop edging is then worked around the front and neck edges.
SHAWL Mesh Section Note: This section is shaped with V-st increases evenly spaced to form seven "wedges". Beginning at neck with A, work 15 Fsc; turn. Row 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in first sc (for first V-st; place marker), *dc in next sc, 2 dc in next sc (V-st made; place marker); repeat from * 6 more times, turn—23 dc, consisting of 8 V-sts and 1 dc between V-sts. Move markers as work progresses. Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in first space between dc sts (for first V-st), [dc in next 2 spaces between dc sts, V-st in next V-st] 7 times, turn—30 dc, consisting of 8 V-sts and 2 dc between V-sts. Rows 3–26: Ch 3, dc in first space between dc sts (for first V-st), [dc in each space between sts across to next V-st, V-st in next V-st] 7 times; turn. At end of last row, change to B in last st—198 dc, consisting of 8 V-sts and 26 dc between V-sts. Do not fasten off. Cluster Section Note: This section is worked with three colors, changing colors at the end of each row in the following color sequence: 1 row of B, 1 row of C, 1 row of A. Carry the unused strand up each side, wrapping yarn at each end as you go. Continue to increase at each end and at six "corners" across, marking the center stitch or ch-1 space at each corner, and moving the markers up as the work progresses. Row 1: With B, ch 3 (counts as hdc, ch 1), hdc in first space between dc sts, *[skip next 2 dc, (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in next space between dc sts] 13 times, skip next 2 dc, (hdc, ch 1, hdc, ch 1, hdc) in next V-st (corner made), move marker into center hdc of corner; repeat from * 5 more times; [skip next 2 dc, (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in next space between dc sts] 13 times, skip next 2 dc, (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in last space between dc sts; change to C in last st, turn—105 ch-1 spaces. Row 2 (RS): Ch 4 (counts as dc, ch 1) Cl in first ch-1 space, [ch 1, Cl] in each ch-1 space across, moving markers into ch-1 space at each corner; ch 1, dc in same ch-1 space as last Cl, changing to A, turn—105 Cl, 106 ch-1 spaces and 2 dc. Row 3: Ch 3 (counts as hdc, ch 1), hdc in first ch-1 space, *(hdc, ch 1, hdc) in each ch-1 space across to next marked corner ch-1 space, (hdc, ch 1, hdc, ch 1, hdc) in corner ch-1 space, move marker into center hdc of corner; repeat from * 5 more times, (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in each ch-1 space across to last ch-1 space; (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in last ch-1 space, changing to B in last st, turn—112 ch-1 spaces. Rows 4–12: Continuing in color sequence, repeat Rows 2 and 3 four more times, then work Row 2 once more. At end of last row—140 Cl, 141 ch-1 spaces, 2 dc. Row 13 (WS): With B, ch 3 (counts as hdc, ch 1), hdc in first ch-1 space, *(hdc, ch 1, hdc) in each ch-1 space across; change to C in last st, turn—141 ch-1 spaces. Do not fasten off C; fasten off remaining unused colors. Lace Ruffle Section Row 1 (RS): With C, ch 3 (counts as dc), shell in first ch-1 space, *[ch 3, sc in next ch-1 space] 3 times, ch 3, shell in next ch-1 space; repeat from * 34 more times, dc in last ch-1 space, turn—35 shells. Row 2: Ch 3, shell in ch-2 space of first shell, *ch 3, skip next ch-3 space, [sc in next ch-3 space, ch 3] 2 times, skip next ch-3 space, shell in ch-2 space of next shell; repeat from * 34 more times, dc in top of turning ch, turn—35 shells.
