FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

Belt measures approximately 3 (3)"/7.5 (7.5)cm wide x 63 (71)"/160 (180.5)cm long, excluding braided fringe

GAUGE

In pattern stitch, 16 sts and 12 rows = 4"/10cm.

STITCHES USED

Chain (ch), double crochet (dc), single crochet (sc), slip stitch (sl st), treble crochet (tr)

SPECIAL TERM

tr2tog: Treble crochet 2 together –*Yarn over twice, insert hook in next st and draw up a loop, [yarn over and draw through 2 loops] twice (one leg of tr2tog made); repeat from * once more (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook (tr2tog complete). Note: In this design, the tr2tog are worked in skipped stitches 3 rows below the current row, throughout.

NOTES

1. Belt is worked lengthwise.

2. To change color, work last stitch of old color to last yarn over; yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete the stitch. Fasten off the old color and proceed with the new color.

BELT

With A, ch 252 (284).

Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 2 ch, *ch 1, sk next ch, sc in next 3 ch; repeat from * across, turn—62 (70) ch-1 sps

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), sk first sc, dc in each sc and ch-1 sp across, turn—251 (283) dc. Change to B.

Note: In Row 3, tr and tr2tog sts are worked into the skipped foundation chs. The first tr is worked in the first skipped foundation ch. Then each following tr2tog is worked by working the first leg in the same foundation ch as the previous tr (or tr2tog), and the 2nd leg in the next skipped foundation ch. This forms a zig-zag pattern on the front of the previous rows.

Row 3: With B, ch 1, sc in first dc, tr in first skipped foundation ch, sk next dc of Row 2, sc in next dc, ch 1, sk next dc, sc in next dc, tr2tog over same ch as previous tr and next skipped foundation ch, sk next dc of Row 2, sc in next dc, ch 1, sk next dc, sc in next dc; *tr2tog over same ch as 2nd leg of previous tr2tog and next skipped foundation ch, sk next dc of Row 2, sc in next dc, ch 1, sk next dc, sc in next dc; repeat from * to last 2 dc, tr in same ch as 2nd leg of last tr2tog, sk next dc of Row 2, sc in top of turning ch, turn.

Row 4: With B, ch 3, sk first sc, dc in each tr, sc, and ch-1 sp across, turn. Change to C.

Row 5: With C, ch 1, sc in first dc, tr in first skipped dc 3 rows below, sk next dc of previous row, sc in next dc, ch 1, sk next dc, sc in next dc, tr2tog over same dc as previous tr and next skipped dc, sk next dc of previous row, sc in next dc, ch 1, sk next dc, sc in next dc; *tr2tog over same dc as 2nd leg of previous tr2tog and next skipped dc, sk next dc of previous row, sc in next dc, ch 1, sk next dc, sc in next dc; repeat from * to last 2 dc, tr in same dc as 2nd leg of previous tr2tog, sk next dc of previous row, sc in top of turning ch, turn.

Row 6: With C, repeat Row 4. Change to D.

Row 7: With D, repeat Row 5.

Row 8: With D, repeat Row 4. Change to A.

Row 9: With A, repeat Row 5. Do not turn at the end of Row 9, and do not fasten off.

Edge Short Ends

With RS facing and A, work sc evenly across short end to next corner, sl st in corner. Fasten off.

With RS facing, join A with sl st in corner of opposite short end, sc evenly across short end to next corner, sl st in corner. Fasten off.

FINISHING

Using yarn needle, weave in all ends.

Braided Tassels

Cut 18 strands of each color, approx 24"/61cm long. Hold 12 strands together (3 each of A, B, C, and D) and fold in half. Draw the fold through the center of a short end, from back to front, draw the ends through the folded loop and pull tight to secure. Work 4 cord braid as follows: Place belt onto flat surface to braid. Group the 6 strands of each color (we will call each grouping of 6 strands a cord), group 6 strands of A together,  6 strands of B together, 6 strands of C together, and 6 strands of D together.

1. Bring the left cord over the cord to its immediate right.

2. Bring right cord under cord to its immediate left and over the next cord to the left (this will be the same cord that was moved in step 1). Gently guide the location where the cords cross up to the top of the braid.

3. Take care to ensure that the ends of the cords are not tangled.

Repeat Steps 1–3 until the braid measures approximately 5 1/2"/14cm long. Tie ends in a knot to secure. Trim ends to about 1 1/2"/4cm long for tassel. Repeat this process to attach a braided tassel to each corner of the same short end. Then, repeat the process to attach three braided tassels to the opposite short end.
