GAUGE In single crochet, 14 sc and 15 rows = 4"/10cm, with 2 strands of yarn held together. Gauge is not critical for this project.
STITCHES USED Chain (ch), double crochet (dc), rev sc (reverse single crochet), single crochet (sc), slip stitch (sl st)
SPECIAL TERM sc2tog: Single crochet 2 together – Insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, (2 loops on hook), insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.
NOTES 1. The hat is worked in rounds with RS always facing. 2. The earflaps are worked back and forth in rows. 3. The hat and earflaps are worked holding 2 strands of yarn together throughout.
HAT Body (above hatband) With larger hook and 1 strand each of A and B held together, ch 50 (55, 65); join with sl st in first ch to form a ring. Round 1: Ch 1, sc in each ch around; join with sl st in first sc—50 (55, 65) sc. Rounds 2–9 (10, 12): Ch 1, sc in each sc around. Do not fasten off. Crown Round 1: Ch 1, *sc2tog, sc in next 8 (9, 11) sc; repeat from * around; join with sl st in first sc—45 (50, 60) sc. Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc around; join with sl st in first sc. Round 3: Ch 1, *sc2tog, sc in next 7 (8, 10) sc; repeat from * around; join with sl st in first sc—40 (45, 55) sc. Round 4: Ch 1, sc in each sc around; join with sl st in first sc. Round 5: Ch 1, *sc2tog, place a marker in sc2tog just made, sc in next 6 (7, 9) sc; repeat from * around; join with sl st in first sc—35 (40, 50) sc. Continue as established, decreasing 5 sts in every other round, as follows: Round 6: Ch 1, sc in each sc around; join with sl st in first sc. Round 7: Ch 1, *sc2tog over marked sc and next sc, move marker to sc2tog just made, sc in each sc to next marked sc; repeat from * around; join with sl st in first sc—30 (35, 45) sc. Repeat last 2 rounds until only 5 sts remain. Fasten off. With 2 strands of A held together, join yarn in same sc as join. Next 2 Rounds: Ch 1, sc in each sc around; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off. Band Working along opposite side of foundation ch, with larger hook and 2 strands of A held together, draw up a loop in first foundation ch. Round 1: Ch 1, sc in each foundation ch around; join with sl st in first sc—50 (55, 65) sc. Round 2: Ch 1, working in back loops only, sc in each sc around; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off. Round 3: With larger hook and 2 strands of B held together, draw up a loop in the same st as join, ch 1, working in front loops only, sc in each sc around; join with sl st in first sc. Rounds 4 and 5: Repeat Rounds 2 and 3. Do not fasten off. Earflaps Note: Earflaps are worked back and forth in rows. Turn at the end of every row. Continue to work with 2 strands of B held together. Row 1: Ch 1, working in back loops only, sc in next 12 (14, 18) sc, turn; leave remaining sts unworked. Row 2: Ch 1, working in front loops only, sc2tog, sc in next 8 (10, 14) sc, sc2tog, turn—10 (12, 16) sc. Row 3: Ch 1, working in back loops only, sc in each sc across, turn. Row 4: Ch 1, working in front loops only, sc2tog, sc in each sc across to last 2 sc, sc2tog, turn—8 (10, 14) sc. Repeat last 2 rows until only 2 sts remain. Fasten off. With RS facing, sk next 19 (20, 22) unworked sts following the first earflap (for front of hat). With 2 strands of B held together, draw up a loop in next sc. Repeat from Row 1 to completion for second earflap.
FINISHING Edging With 2 strands of B held together, join yarn with sl st in edge of hat. Work sl st evenly around entire edge (including earflaps). Fasten off. Using yarn needle, weave in all ends. Chain Braids (make 3) With smaller hook and 1 strand of A, ch 60, sl st in the tip of one earflap, ch 60. Fasten off. With smaller hook and 1 strand of A, ch 60, sl st in tip of same earflap. Fasten off. You should now have three chains attached to the tip of the earflap. Repeat this process to attach three B-colored chains to same tip. Group the six chains into three groups of two chains each, with one A chain and one B chain in each group. Braid the chains together and tie a knot at the end to secure. Trim ends. Repeat this process to attach chain braids to tip of other earflap, and top of hat. |
