GAUGE

In half double crochet, using smaller hook, 16 sts and 13 rows = 4"/10cm.

STITCHES USED

Chain (ch), half double crochet (hdc), single crochet (sc), slip stitch (sl st).

SPECIAL TERM

Fhdc: Foundation half double crochet (This technique creates a foundation chain and a row of half double crochet stitches in one)—

Step 1:Place a slip knot on hook, ch 3, insert hook in second ch from hook and draw up a loop, insert hook in 3rd ch from hook and draw up a loop; yarn over and draw through one loop on hook (the "chain"); yarn over and draw through 3 loops on hook (the "half double crochet").

Step 2:The following stitch is worked under the forward 2 loops of the stem of the previous stitch (into the "chain"). Yarn over, insert hook into the face of the "chain" and under the nub at the back of the "chain", draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through one loop on hook (the "chain"), yarn over and draw through 3 loops on hook (the "half double crochet"). Repeat for the length of foundation.

sc2tog: Single crochet 2 together—Insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, (2 loops on hook), insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

NOTES

1. Vest is worked from side to side, in half double crochet.

2. Each row of the body uses more than one color.

3. Use a separate ball of yarn for each color. Do not carry yarn across WS.

4. To change color, work last stitch of old color to last yarn over, drop old color to WS of work, yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook. Proceed with new color.

5. The ch-1 at the beginning of each row does not count as the first stitch of the row. Work the first stitch of each row in the last stitch of the previous row.

6. The fronts do not meet at the center front.

HELPFUL

Working more or fewer rows (inches) in the side panels or front panels will enable the width of the garment to be changed, if desired.
