One pair size US 7 (4.5 mm) needles or size to obtain gauge

One pair US size 6 (4mm) needles

Yarn needle

4 Buttons – 1/2” diameter

4 small snaps

GAUGE

In Stockinette stitch, using US size 7 (4.5 mm) needles, 20 sts and 24 rows = 4"/10 cm

 

STITCHES USED

Seed stitch (Seed st)

Stockinette stitch (St st)

 

BACK

Using smaller needles, cast on 66 (72, 78) sts. Work in Seed st for 6 rows. Change to larger needles and St st. Work even until piece measures 9 (10, 12)” from beginning, end with a WS row.

(RS) Dec 16 (18, 20) sts evenly spaced across row – 50 (54, 58) sts.

Change to Seed st.

Shape Armhole

Bind off 3 (4, 4) sts at beginning of next 2 rows.

Dec 1 st at each end every other row 2 (3, 3) times – 40 (40, 44) sts.

Work until piece measures 13 (15, 17)” from beginning.

Bind off all sts loosely.

 

LEFT FRONT

Using smaller needles, cast on 50 (52, 54) sts. Work in Seed st for 6 rows.

(RS) K to last 5 sts, k5 for garter st button band.

(WS) K5 for garter st button band, p to end.

Continue as est in St st, keeping 5 sts in garter st for button band. Work even until piece measures 9 (10, 12)” from beginning, end with a WS row.

(RS) Dec 12 sts evenly spaced across next row – 38 (40, 42) sts.

Change to Seed st.

Shape Armhole

Bind off 3 (4, 4) sts at armhole edge once. Dec 1 st at armhole edge every other row 2 (3, 3) times – 33 (33, 35) sts.

Work until piece measures 11 (13, 14 1/2)” from beginning, end with a RS row.

Shape Neck

At neck edge, bind off every other row 15 (15, 16) sts once, then 2 sts once and 1 st 4  times – 12 (12, 13) sts.

Work until piece measures 13 (15, 17)” from beginning.

Bind off all sts loosely.

 

RIGHT FRONT

Work as for Left Front, reversing all shaping

 

SLEEVES

Using smaller needles, cast on 28 (30, 32) sts. Work in Seed st for 6 rows. Change to larger needles and St st.Inc 1 st each side every 6th row 5 (6, 7) times -- 38 (42, 46) sts. Work even until piece measures 6 (8, 10)" from the beginning, end with a WS row.

Shape Cap

(RS) Bind off 3 (4, 4) sts at beginning of next 2 rows Dec 1 st at each end every 4th row 5 (6, 6) times, end with a WS – 22 (22, 26) sts.

(RS) K2tog across entire row for gathered cap – 11 (11, 13) sts.  

Bind off in p.

 

FINISHING

Sew shoulder seams. Set in sleeves; sew sleeve and side seams.

Collar

With RS facing and smaller needles, pick up 36 (40, 44) sts evenly around neck omitting the double breasted plaque. Working in Seed st inc 1 st at each end every 4th row 3 times – 42 (46, 50) sts. Continue until collar measures 2 1/2 (3. 3 1/2)”.

Bind off all sts loosely.

Sew buttons on. Sew snaps on in back of buttons.

Using yarn needle, weave in ends.
