3-Needle Bind Off (Joining 2 pieces together as you bind off.)

Place the stitches of the pieces to be joined on separate needles, (or each end of a circular needle), held one behind the other with right-sides facing each other, in left hand; with a third needle, (the same size or 1 size largerthan used for knitting the pieces), k2tog [1 from the front needle, 1 from the back needle—1 stitch on right-hand needle], *K2tog [2 stitches on right-hand needle], bind off 1 stitch in usual manner; repeat from * to end.

STITCHES USED

2-Color 1 x 1 Rib (multiple of 2 sts)

Row/Rnd 1 (RS): Using MC, knit.

Row/Rnd 2: Using MC, * k1, p1; repeat from * across/around.

Shoulder sts may be placed on a holder, and joined using 3-Needle Bind Off (see Special Techniques), or they may be bound off and seamed using yarn needle.

HELPFUL
Place markers (pm) each side of Cables as indicated in Cable patt; use different color markers for neck shaping.

BACK

Using larger needles and MC, cast on 60 (66, 72, 78) sts.

(RS) Change to smaller needles; using MC, * k1, p1; repeat from * across.

Establish 2-Color Rib

Rows 2 – 9: Beg Row 2 of patt, work in 2-color rib, end (MC) Row 1 of patt.

Row 10: Using MC, purl.

Change to larger needles.

Establish Cable Pattern: (RS)K2 (5, 8, 11); beg Row 1, work Cable pattern across center 56 sts; k2 (5, 8, 11) sts.

Continue as established, keeping sts each side of Cable panel in St st throughout, until piece measures 6 (6, 6 1/2, 7)" from beg, end with a WS row.

Shape Armholes

(RS) Bind off 3 (5, 7, 9) sts at beginning of next 2 rows—54 (56, 58, 60) sts remain.

(RS) Dec 1 st each side every other row 3 times—48 (50, 52, 54) sts remain.

Work even until armhole measures 5 (5 1/2, 6, 61/2)" from beginning of shaping, end with a WS row; place a marker (pm) each side of center 18 (20, 20, 22) sts for neck.

Shape Neck

(RS) Work in patt across to 2 sts before first neck marker, k2tog; place center sts on holder; join a second ball of yarn, k2tog, work to end in patt—14 (14, 15, 15) sts remain each side for shoulder.

Working both sides at same time, at each neck edge, dec 1 st every other row 2 times—12 (12, 13, 13) sts remain for shoulder.

Bind off all sts in patt; or place sts on holder (see Note).

FRONT

Work as for Back to underarm.

Shape Armholes and Neck

(RS) Bind off 3 (5, 7, 9) sts at beginning of next 2 rows—54 (56, 58, 60) sts remain.

(RS) Dec 1 st each side every other row 2 times, end with a WS row—50 (52, 54, 56) sts remain; pm each side of 2-center Front sts.

(RS) Complete armhole shaping as for Back by dec 1 st each armhole this row; and AT THE SAME TIME, work across to first center Front marker; join a second ball of yarn, k2tog (center Front sts), and place center Front st on holder for neck; work to end in patt—23 (24, 25, 26) sts each side.

(WS) Working both sides at same time, work 1 row even.

(RS) Work armhole edges even for remainder of piece; at each neck edge, dec 1 st every other row 11 (12, 12, 13) times—12 (12, 13, 13) sts remain for shoulder. Work even until piece measures same as Back to shoulder.

Bind off all sts in patt; or place sts on holder.

FINISHING

Block pieces to measurements, being careful not to flatten texture. Join shoulder seams, using method of choice.

Armhole Bands

With RS facing, using smaller needles, beg at underarm, pick up and knit 60 (66, 72, 78) sts evenly around armhole (pick-up row counts as Row 1 of 2-color rib).

Rows 2 – 9: Beg Row 2, work in 2-color rib, end (MC) Row 1 of patt.

Row 10: Using MC, bind off all sts loosely in rib.

Sew side and band seams.

Neckband

With RS facing, using circular needle and MC, beg at right shoulder seam, pick up and knit 7 sts along Back neck shaping to holder; knit 18 (20, 20, 22) sts from holder; pick up and knit 7 sts to left shoulder seam; working down left Front neck shaping, pick up and knit 26 (28, 30, 32) sts to center Front; k1 from holder and place a removable marker on this center Front st; pick up and knit 26 (28, 30, 32) sts up right Front to shoulder; pm for beg of round (pick-up rnd counts as Rnd 1 of 2-color rib pattern)—85 (91, 95, 101) sts.

Shape Front Neck

Dec Rnd: Work next rnd of 2-color rib patt around to 1 st before center Front marked st, [slip 1, k2tog, PSSO] across next 3 sts (center st and 1 st each side of center), replacing marker on new center st; work in patt to end.

Cont in patt, work 1 rnd even.

Repeat last 2 rnds 4 times—10 rnds total.

Cont with MC, bind off all sts loosely in rib, working dec at center Front on bind-off rnd.
