Hat measures approximately 21"/53 cm (23"/58 cm) in circumference

 

GAUGE

In Stitch pattern, 18sc and 16 rnds = 4”/10 cm, using smaller hook

 

SPECIAL TECHNIQUES

Changing Colors (end of round): Work last stitch until two loops remain on hook, yarn over using the new color, draw through both loops on hook.

Extended Single Crochet (exsc): Insert hook in stitch indicated, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through one loop on hook—2 loops remain; yarn over and draw through both loops on hook.

Spike Single Crochet (Ssc): Insert hook in skipped stitch indicated 3 rows below (unless otherwise state), yarn over and pull up a loop to current row height, yarn over and draw through both loops on hook.

Puff Stitch (Puff st):  [Yarn over, insert hook in stitch indicated, yarn over and pull up a loop] 3 times, yarn over and draw through all loops on hook.

NOTES

  1. Finger Loop: To leave no visible hole at beginning of Hat, work as follows: Wrap yarn once around finger, work first st into loop, slip loop off finger, continue working first round into loop, pull yarn tail to tighten, join with a slip st to first st.
  2. Color changes within a row are noted (A) or (B) before the stitches to be worked in each color; work in color indicated until next color is noted.

Place a stitch marker at beginning of round, and move up each round.

 

WOMAN’S HAT

Beginning at crown, make a Finger Loop (see Notes).

Rnd 1:(A) Work 8 sc in finger wrap loop, join with a slip st to first sc—8 sc.

Rnd 2:(B) Ch 1, work 2 sc in each sc around, join with a slip st to first sc—16 sc.

Rnd 3:(A) Ch 1, * work 2 sc in next sc, (B) sc in next sc; rep from * around, join with a slip st to first sc—24 sc.

Rnd 4:(A) Ch 1, * work 2 sc in next sc, (B) sc in next sc, (A) sc in next sc; rep from * around, join with a slip st to first sc—32 sc.

Rnd 5: (A) Ch 1, * work 2 sc in next sc, (B) sc in next sc, (A) sc in next sc, (B) sc in next sc; rep from * around, join with a slip st to first sc—40 sc.

Rnds 13, 17 and 21: (A) Ch 1, * sc in next exsc, ch 1, skip 1 exsc, work Ssc (see Special Techniques); rep from * around, join with a slip st to first sc.

Rnds 14, 18 and 22: Ch 1, * work exsc in next sc, ch 1, skip 1 ch-1 space, work 1 exsc in each of next [sc, Ssc]; rep from * around, join with a slip st to fist exsc.

Rnds 15 and 19: (B) Ch 1, * sc in next exsc, work 1 Ssc, sc in next exsc, ch 1, skip 1 exsc; rep from * around, join with a slip st to first sc.

Rnds 16 and 20: Ch 1, * work exsc in each of next [sc, Ssc, sc], ch 1, skip 1 exsc; rep from * around, join with a slip st to first exsc.

Change to larger hook.

Rnds 23 and 24: Repeat Rnds 15 and 16.

Rnds 25 – 31: Repeat Rnds 13 – 16 once, Rnds 13 – 15 once—80 sts.

 

EDGING

Rnd 32: (B) Ch 1, * sc in next sc, work Puff st in next Ssc, sc in next sc, (A) Ssc in skipped exsc 1 row below; rep from * around, join with a slip st to first sc. 

Fasten Off.

 

FINISHING

Using yarn needle, weave in ends.

 

MAN’S HAT

Beginning at crown, make a Finger Loop (see Notes).

Rnds 1 – 10: Work as Woman's Hat—80 sc.

Rnd 11:(A) Ch 1, * work 2 sc in next sc, [(B) 1 sc in next sc, (A) 1 sc in next sc] 5 times; rep from * around, join with a slip st to fist sc —88 sc.

Rnds 12 and 13:  Ch 1, sc in each sc around working color A  in all color A sts and color B in all color B sts, join with a slip st to first sc.

Rnd 14:(A) Ch 1, * work 2 sc in next sc, [(B) 1 sc in next sc (A) 1 sc in next sc] 5 times, (B) sc in next sc; rep from * around, join with a slip st to first sc —96 sc.

Rnds 15 – 18: Repeat Rnd 12 of Man's Hat—96 sc.

Rnds 19 and 20: Repeat Rnds 11 and 12 of Woman’s Hat.

Rnd 21 – 35: Repeat Rnds 13 – 16 of Woman’s Hat 3 times, Rnds 13 – 15 once—96 sts.

EDGING

Rnd 36:(B) Ch 1, working over previous 2 rows, Ssc between each st 3 rows below, join with a slip st to first Ssc.  Fasten Off.

 

FINISHING

Using yarn needle, weave in ends.
